A trek to snow line : ( Mcleodganj - Triund - Ilaka - Triund - Mcleodganj )
 
A beautiful trek through forests of deodar, oak and rhododendron. Triund is situated at an altitude of 2,827 metres. The snowline starts just 5 km. from Triund and affords a breathtaking view of the snows above and the valley below.
Day 1 : Mcleodganj to Triund :- The 3 days trek starts with a beautiful walk through mixed forests of deodar and oak. From Triund you can have a panoramic view of the Kangra valley. There is a rest house for overnight stay.
Day 2 : Triund - Ilaka - Triund :- The second day trek covers 9 to 10 kms. along glacial morains. Ilaka is used as a base camp for the shepherds to go over the pass. The small glacier is called snow line. You can have lunch at snow line or just enjoy the beauty of nature. The come back to Triund.
Day 3 : Triund to Mcleodganj :- You can take the same route on the way back or follow the grassy ridge which takes us to Bhagsu Nag Temple crossing a small waterfall on the way. Bhagsu Nag is just 1.6 kms. from Mcleodganj by road.
 
go to top A Trek from Mcleodganj to Lahaul Valley over Indrahar & Kugti Pass :
 
The duration of this trek is 15 days and you start from Mcleodganj.
Day 1 : Mcleodganj to Triund :- Triund is a nice camping place at an altitude of 2,827 meters. From Triund you can have the panoramic view of the whole Kangra Valley. The trek of Triund is ( 9 kms. ) a pleasant walk through deodar and oak forests. You can also book the Forest Rest House for overnight stay.
Day 2 : Triund to Lehs Cave :- ( 3,700 meters ) A short walk of 6 kms. through deodar and oak forests. After 4 kms. you reach ILaka which is situated at the snout of a small glacier. The snow line starts from here. After crossing the glacier, you go over a steep rocky ridge for 2 kms. and reach Lehs Cave. This is a big cave and also used for overnight stay.
Day 3 : Lehs Cave to Indrahar :- ( 4,450 meters ) The trek to the pass goes over soft snow in early summer and rocky faces in monsoon. The trek up to the pass is a steep climb. Sometimes, fogy weather with zero visibility obstructs the movements of climbers. It is advisable to stay back and wait for the weather to get clear. The trek during April and May is more tough due to presence of hard ice. On reaching the top of the pass, you can see the Pir Panjal ranges very clearly. The other side of the pass remains covered with snow till the mid of July. The trek then descends down and reaches Chata Parao ( 3,700 meters ) which is a beautiful green pasture and is ideal for night camping.
Day 4 : Chata Parao to Kwarsi :- ( 2,800 meters ) The trek further descends down up to Chata Nullah ( 6 kms. ). Then you reach Kwarsi, a beautiful tribal village surrounded by thickly wooded pine trees. You stay in the village for a night. The villagers are very helpful.
Day 5 : Kwarsi to Chanota Khas :- ( 2,700 meters ) You trek 16 kms. from Kwarsi to Chanota Khas on the 5th day. The trek goes through thick forests and lush green fields. You come across many small places inhabited by Gaddi people.
Day 6 : Chanota Khas to Garola :- ( 2,600 meters ) Garola is 12 kms. from Chanota Khas. The trail goes by the side of river Ravi.
Day 7 : Garola to Bharmaur :- ( 2,200 meters ) The 14 kms. trek goes from Garola to Bharmaur. Bharmaur is a beautiful village and is well connected to Chamba by roads. Stay in guest house is preferred.
Day 8 : Bharmaur to Hadsar :- A narrow road leads you to Hadsar from Bharmaur, which is dangerous for cars and jeeps. It is advisable to go on foot. Hadsar is a small village with tea shops and few people living nearby. From Hadsar, one trail goes to famous Manimahesh Lake and other to Kugti village. Little down from Hadsar, there is a camping place in the forests.
Day 9 : Hadsar to Kugti Village :- Kugti is 13 kms. from Hadsar. The trail is narrow. You should cross the narrow trail one by one. You also have to cross small wooden bridges over streams. Sometimes, the Buddal river becomes tribulent and causes devastation. The Kugti village is inhabited by approximately 1000 people. Kugti village has shops and a Civil Dispensary. The people of the village belong to Gaddi trible and are very helpful.
Day 10 : Kugti Village to Kelang Temple :- The Kelang temple is nearly 5 kms. from Kugti village at the height of 3,200 meters. The temple is dedicated to the Bazir of Lord Shiva. Close to the temple is a place for night camping.
Day 11 : Kelang Temple to Duggi :- It is 6 hours walk from Kelang temple to Duggi through green pasture. The place is very close to the mountains from all sides so you should have some heavy clothes to face the chilly winds of the Pir Panjal range.
Day 12 : Duggi to Lehs Cave :- Lehs Cave is situated at the bottom of Kugti pass. Sometimes it snows in the month of July here because of high altitude. Lehs is surrounded by Pir Panjal and Manimahesh Dhar.
Day 13 : Over Kugti Pass to Khurlu :- The excitement and adventure reach to the peak when you cross Kugti pass. You should start early in the morning so that you can reach the pass before the sunrise. It takes about 4 hours to reach the pass. It is a steep climb up to the pass. Beyond the pass is a big glacier with some hidden and some open craves. You need good equipment and a trained guide to walk over this glacier. After 6 to 7 hours walk, you reach at the camping place called Khurlu. Remember that only an expert guide can locate the trail to Khurlu.
Day 14 : Khurlu to Rapa ( Lahaul Valley ) :- After 10 kms. walk from Khurlu, you reach the first village of Lahaul Valley. The trek involves a number of ridges crossing and glacier walking. The trail is not easy to locate because of rocky path and glacial morains. Finally after crossing a small glacier, you reach Rapa Village for night stay.
Day 15 : Rapa to Keylong :- Keylong is 22 kms. from Rapa village. After 3 hours walk, you reach the road head at Sansa. From Sansa it takes another 3 hours to reach Keylong by bus. Keylong is the district headquarter of Lahaul and Spiti. There are some good hotels at Keylong. From Keylong, you can go to Leh or come back to Manali over Rohtang Pass.
